Bonnie tells Rolly that the girl’s body was “Hung up on one of those metal pilings where the border fence goes into the ocean.” Those pilings have been extended in recent years to prevent people from swimming around the border.

There is a real Bonnie Hammond, or at least the inspiration for Bonnie Hammond, someone who dated a friend of mine many years ago. Last I heard, she was no longer a police officer. We’ve lost touch over the years, so I can’t tell you much more than that.
On a related note, as I write this, the city of San Diego has just appointed its first female Chief of Police, 31-year-vet Shelley Zimmerman. So I might have to make Bonnie chief in a future book, although I’n not sure she’d have any time for Rolly after she becomes chief.
